Traces
Each drawing in this series is essentially a monotype, a completely unique “print” or transfer from one surface to another. Working on the floor, I put paper or Yupo on top of another piece of paper, which has a charcoal-ed—very thick and black—circle, oval or rectangle. I improvise from a specific feeling or body focus on top of the paper or Yupo, sometimes standing, sometimes full body on the floor. Lifting the paper or Yupo that I’ve danced on reveals the “drawing”—whatever charcoal has adhered to it, from the pressure of my dancing body and feet. It’s a way to examine the traces of the moving body, as if we could indeed retain them through passing time. For some of these drawings, I’ve then literally traced the charcoal monotype, and layered that in front, to again examine movement and the body passing through time.
